Via Rialto – The heroic Professor Todesco

Mario Todesco, a humanities teacher at the Tito Livio high school, once lived in one of the small houses on Via Rialto, whose house became a point of reference for the Resistance after 25 July 1943. After 8 September, while continuing to give lectures, he began to help prisoners who had escaped from the camps, providing Jews with false documents and helping them to escape arrest, which he did. After a short period in prison, he was finally released in 1944. Unfortunately, his name turned up in a letter found on the person of a partisan and he fell victim to the fury of the Black Brigades. On 25 April 2008, the President of the Republic awarded Professor Todesco the Gold Medal of Civil Merit.
