Via Santa Rosa – A problematic name

0
The names of some of the city's streets are linked to curious anecdotes. One famous anecdote is that of Borgo Tedesco, which the Austrian police thought of changing to "Via Tedesco" just before the uprising of 1848 and then, realising the significance of the plaque and the tension it would bring to a city already hostile to their domination, decided to change it to "Via Tedesca". But the citizens jumped at the chance and the next day a plaque bearing the words 'Via i tedeschi' (Away with the Germans) could be found near the beginning of the street. The Austrians then became furious and the street remained nameless for a long time until it took the name of the neighbouring Santa Rosa.
