Vico delle Carabaghe owes its name to ancient war machines. The 'carabaghe' were a kind of catapult, instruments of death stored in the warehouses on the ground floor (note, if you happen to be here, that there are no steps after the doors opening onto the alley, as you would expect) and dragged over the nearby walls in case of need.
