Vicolo della Neve – The nivaioli workshop

0
In Vicolo della Neve there used to be a shop of 'nivaioli', those who sold snow. The snow, which was used in the manufacture of cold drinks and ice cream for aristocratic families, came from the 'nivieri', pits dug in the mountains to store the snow even after winter. In the event of a shortage of this good, the law required suppliers to supply the shopkeepers at all costs, so it was not uncommon for the snow to come from the top of Mount Etna. These shops remained active until the 19th century, when the first icicle factories began to spread.
