Zamosc – The Padua twin

Not many people know it, but the city of Padua has a twin city some 1400 kilometres away. It all began in the spring of 1561, when the young Jan Zamoyski (descendant of a noble Polish family) arrived in Padua to perfect his legal studies. Jan, who was staying in the Contrada del Pozzo della Vacca, more or less at number 12 Via Ospedale Civile, gained considerable fame and after his doctorate he even became rector of the Faculty of Law. Returning to his homeland and missing Padua so much, he founded Zamość, a fortified city that he intended to be as similar as possible to the Italian city. Today this northern Padua is a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site.
